Invitees to the Copa América

Because only 10 South American countries play, CONMEBOL has been inviting 2 countries from other football federations since 1993.

In 2019, for example, both Japan and Qatar were allowed to play in the Copa América. For Qatar's national team, the first time. Japan was allowed to stand in this cup tournament once before, that was in 1999. Both Japan and Qatar could not touch beyond the group stages.

A total of nine countries received invitations to play in the tournament. These countries are: Mexico, Costa Rica, the United States, Jamaica, Japan, Haiti, Honduras, Panama and Qatar.

In the 2021 edition, Australia and Qatar were invited. But presumably due to World Cup qualifiers, both Australia and Qatar withdrew from the tournament. So the Copa América 2021 hosted by Brazil was played with only 10 national teams instead of the usual 12 football teams.

When will the Copa América be played?

The Copa América was organised on an irregular basis, every 1, 2 or 3 years.

Since 2007, it has been a 4-yearly tournament like the European Championship and the World Cup. Now it's getting interesting :)

Exceptionally for the 100th anniversary of the Copa América, another edition was also played in 2016. Since an edition was already played in 2015, another edition was then played in 2019, 4 years after 2015, and to keep it in line with the European Championship, they then played the 2020 edition as the last irregularly scheduled tournament. So from now on, it will run concurrently with the European Championship and will also be played that way in 2024.

In terms of month, the tournament is usually played from mid to late June.

As soon as the playing schedule of the new edition is known, you can follow the results and standings live here.

Who is the record title holder of the Copa América?

At the time of writing (2023), both Argentina and Uruguay have 15 "Copa América" titles to their name. Brazil is six titles behind, having won the final nine times.

Argentina does have the most honorary titles to their name. If we add up the number of times they came 1st, 2nd and 3rd, Argentina is the absolute team to beat, with 34 medals. Uruguay achieved 30 so far.

Will Morocco play in the Copa América in 2024?

According to some sources, Morocco has been invited to the 2024 edition of the Copa América. The decision to participate in the South American tournament will then rest with the Moroccan Football Federation. An official announcement has yet to be found. This would make the Moroccan football team the first African country to play in the Copa América.

The United States hosts the Copa América in 2024

Exceptionally, the United States will host the Copa América in 2024. The US is not a member of CONMEBOL. Normally Ecuador would host the tournament but had not confirmed. On that, the US and Peru made it clear they wanted to host it. In the end it became the US, which can also use hosting the tournament as a lead-up to hosting the World Cup in 2026. The US will host the World Cup in 2026, along with Mexico and Canada.
